Codes of Ethics for Professional Teachers are designed to provide a standard framework that states what professional teaching standards can be expected to be observed in their classrooms. These standards are a tool for educators to determine if their teaching methods are consistent with the needs of students. When teachers abide by these ethics, they benefit their students by ensuring that the educational environment is a safe and supportive place to learn and grow. In turn, teachers who violate these codes of ethics can find their actions met with serious consequences.

The purpose of the West Virginia Professional Teachers Standards is to set the foundation for teachers to teach children with confidence and professionalism. This educational philosophy was developed by an independent working group of West Virginia professionals, school psychologists, school policy experts, and other concerned teachers. The mission of the committee is “to establish a code of professional practice for teachers in the state of West Virginia”.\

However, this is not enough to say that all teachers will adhere to the same codes. Because every individual is different, there is a wide spectrum of behaviors teachers may need to address in their classroom. Therefore, the West Virginia Professional Teachers Standards is merely a guideline, rather than a promise of what behaviors teachers will not commit. Instead of using the set of standards as a guideline, educators work from the type of situations they face on a daily basis to determine how their teaching standards should be implemented in their classroom.

There is a difference between setting up classroom rules and implementing effective teaching standards. A teacher can only be ordered to comply with the rules if there is reason to do so. For example, a teacher could be asked to modify a lesson or to ensure that a student understand a concept through repeated discussion.

In order to be consistent with the principles of the West Virginia Professional Teachers Standards, teachers must take a hands-on approach to their lessons. The process of teaching is much more complex than simply pointing out concepts and waiting for students to pick them up. In order to help students learn, teachers must engage them in real activities. Teachers can use various methods to do this, including assignment practice, lesson observations, and interactive sessions. Using these techniques effectively enables teachers to meet the objectives of their class.

In order to ensure that professional development is implemented correctly, teachers need to be encouraged to attend professional development seminars and workshops. Attending these seminars allows teachers to become more knowledgeable about their field, gain new skills, and enhance their understanding of professional practices. These seminars often occur around important professional development dates, such as Teacher Appreciation Day and Teacher Appreciation Month. They allow teachers to connect with other professionals on a one-on-one basis and build stronger professional relationships.

While teachers are required to follow the basic teaching standards set forth by the WVPTB, some areas of teaching are considered optional.

Some of these areas include; special education, music, foreign language, and Math. Students who are deaf or hard of hearing can also benefit from the application of Teaching Standards, especially if the teacher has a background in these fields. For instance, if a teacher teaches music classes and he or she also teaches sign language, the lessons will count towards professional development. Students who need additional assistance with their studies should also check to see if their teacher is a member of the designated area.

The Teaching Standards also requires teachers to demonstrate continuing professional development on a yearly basis. This part of the standards calls for teachers to revise basic instructional methods that have been used for several years. A teacher may choose to use new instructional methods or introduce a classic approach. However, it is important to remember that teachers are only required to teach to the level of the class they were placed in. The number of years a teacher has been teaching may also impact their success as they try to incorporate current and emerging practices into their classroom.
